Our Community Confessions:
Because we affirm the preceding Statement of Faith to be true, all members of the ELIC community commit themselves to the following convictions and conduct shaped by them. Our spirit in this commitment is that we are a community of forgiven sinners who have received grace and in like manner willingly extend that grace to others. In all things we strive to live out the fruit of the spirit: joy, peace, compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, and most of all, love.
Based on our Statement of Faith and our high view of scripture, our convictions and thus our conduct are made clear in the following confessions:
- We confess that we believe in the authority, clarity, and complete sufficiency of the Bible. God's word is sufficient for all matters related to faith and conduct.
- We confess that we believe in the triune God-head/the Trinity: Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. We are Trinitarian.
- We confess that we believe in the uniqueness and exclusiveness of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. There is no other name, nor any other way, that offers salvation, forgiveness of sin, and eternal life.
- We confess that we believe in the lostness and depravity of humanity apart from God's grace and the power of the Gospel. Apart from this grace, humanity is destined to an eternity separated from God.
- We confess that we believe in the Good News of the Gospel and that its message is guaranteed by the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. Because of this Gospel of grace, humanity through faith can enjoy heaven and the presence of God eternally.
- We confess that we believe sexual intimacy is designed by God to be expressed solely within a marriage between one man and one woman. This view of sexuality and marriage is rooted in the Genesis account of creation, reflected in the teachings of Jesus Christ himself, and is maintained consistently throughout scripture. Whatever one's personal tendencies and desires, the call of Christ on our lives is the same: sexual purity manifest among the married as complete faithfulness and by those who are unmarried by living a chaste life (1 Thess. 4: 3-8).
- We confess that we believe that every person (as distinct from the rest of creation) bears the image of God and that though God is eternal, He in time, space, and history created man and woman. As God's creation in His image, man and woman lived in perfection in the Garden of Eden but rebelled, sinned against God, and thereby experienced separation from God. Man and woman continue to exist as the image bearers of God but are marred by sin. It is this sinful nature that confuses and distorts all that we were originally created and intended by God to be.
